What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a facial treatment that creates thousands of micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating the skin’s natural healing and restorative processes. Dermapen® is an FDA-approved microneedling device that can tighten skin, minimize pore size, reduce fine lines, soften stretch marks, and help heal all types of scars. This system essentially replaces older, damaged skin and allows for the generation of new collagen, dermal and epidermal skin. Dermapen® has been approved by the FDA and offers results that can be similar to those offered by fractional laser resurfacing, with a lower price tag and no downtime.

How does Dermapen microneedling work?

This procedure uses a sterilized microneedling device that vibrates several hundred times per minute. The speed is adjustable for customized precision in sensitive areas such as around the eyes and nose, as well as in spots that require extra attention, such as scars. The microneedling device is passed over the treatment area several times, creating thousands of tiny punctures.

Your skin may look and feel slightly inflamed immediately following your procedure. However, no downtime is necessary, and you can return to your normal routine the following day, taking special care to avoid direct sun exposure.

Am I a candidate for microneednling?

The best candidates for microneedling in The Woodlands at SGK Plastic Surgery are men or women of almost any age who are concerned with the appearance of their skin. The most common Dermapen® candidates are people concerned with acne scars, a loss of facial firmness, uneven skin tone or texture, or stretch marks. Microneedling can also improve acne, although candidates should not have an active acne breakout. Dermapen® microneedling is frequently combined with other med spa treatments as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

Microneedling FAQ's

Is microneedling painful?

While the procedure is not painful, a topical numbing cream is first applied to the skin to maximize comfort during your treatment. Because the needle is disposable, new needles are used for each procedure for optimal health and safety.

When can I expect to see results from my microneedling treatment?

Many people see good results after a single Dermapen® treatment, although experiences vary. Dr. Kim recommends a series of treatments spaced four to six weeks apart for the best results. Depending on the extent of skin correction required, you may benefit the most from three to six microneedling appointments.

Are there any potential side effects or risks associated with microneedling?

Mild redness and swelling are common after microneedling, but serious side effects are rare. It's crucial to follow post-treatment care guidelines to minimize any potential risks and ensure optimal results.

Is microneedling suitable for all skin types?

Microneedling is generally safe for various skin types, but individuals with certain skin conditions or active infections may not be suitable candidates. Consultation with a skincare professional helps determine its appropriateness for individual skin concerns.

Can microneedling be combined with other cosmetic procedures?

Microneedling can be effectively combined with procedures like chemical peels or dermaplaning to achieve more comprehensive results. These combinations are tailored to individual skin needs, addressing various concerns simultaneously for enhanced skin rejuvenation.
