The nose is the centerpiece of the face, and when we look at one another, it’s usually one of the first facial features we notice. Unfortunately, many of us are unsatisfied with the way our noses look, which can have a negative impact on self-esteem and self-image. However, if you aren’t happy with the appearance of your nose, you may have more power to change it than you realize. With rhinoplasty performed by one of our skilled plastic surgeons at SGK Plastic Surgery, you can achieve the beautiful, proportionate nose you’ve always wanted.

What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, also known as a nose job, is a popular cosmetic surgical procedure used to improve the shape, size, and overall appearance of the nose. Although the surgery is primarily performed for cosmetic reasons, rhinoplasty can also be used to correct certain breathing problems, such as a deviated septum.

What Issues Can Rhinoplasty Address?

There are quite a few aesthetic issues that can make people self-conscious about their noses. Fortunately, rhinoplasty can correct or improve your nasal appearance in many different ways, including:

  • Reducing the overall size of the nose
  • Adjusting or reshaping the nasal tip
  • Straightening the dorsum (nasal bridge)
  • Removing bumps or humps from the dorsum
  • Improving the shape and/or symmetry of the nose
  • Adjusting the width and size of the nostrils

Rhinoplasty Techniques

Depending on your specific aesthetic preferences, there are two primary types of rhinoplasty techniques that you may choose from:

Open Rhinoplasty

During an open rhinoplasty, three small incisions are made: two inside the nostrils and one connecting the two across the columella. The third incision is called the trans-collumelar incision, and it allows the plastic surgeon to open the skin of the nose. This makes it much easier to evaluate the entire nasal structure and make more precise adjustments. Open rhinoplasty also makes it easier to utilize certain cartilage grafting techniques.

Closed Rhinoplasty

The main thing that differentiates closed rhinoplasty from open rhinoplasty is that closed rhinoplasty does not include the trans-collumelar incision. Although this slightly limits the adjustments that can be made to the nasal structure, it also minimizes the likelihood of visible scarring. Typically, closed rhinoplasty is a good choice for patients seeking only minor changes to the nasal appearance.

What Should I Expect During the Surgery?

Before you undergo rhinoplasty, the first step of the process will be to have a consultation with one of our skilled plastic surgeons. During this meeting, the doctor will talk with you about the rhinoplasty procedure and answer all of your questions. They will also examine your nose and ask you about what exactly you’re hoping to achieve with the surgery. If you decide to move forward with the procedure, your surgeon will work closely with you to create a personalized treatment plan that will help you achieve the precise nasal appearance you desire.

Typically, rhinoplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure using either general anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, your plastic surgeon will begin by making small incisions within the nose (the specific incisions will depend on which type of rhinoplasty is being performed). The doctor will then adjust and remove cartilage and/or bone as needed per your unique treatment plan. When your desired changes have been made, your surgeon will close the incisions with sutures and apply bandages to the area. In total, rhinoplasty typically takes between 90 minutes and three hours to complete. You should be able to return home a couple of hours after your surgery, but you’ll need someone else to drive you.

How Long Is the Recovery Time?

After your rhinoplasty, your surgeon will give you thorough instructions to ensure that the healing process goes smoothly. You will likely experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort, but those symptoms will gradually subside on their own. Rest will be extremely important for the first week, and sleeping with your head elevated will help reduce your swelling. Most patients require between one and two weeks of recovery before returning to work, and it’s important to wait at least four to six weeks before partaking in strenuous physical activity.

Am I a Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

Adults who would like to improve their nasal appearance could be good candidates for rhinoplasty. To be an ideal candidate for the procedure, you should:

  • Be in generally good physical health
  • Have a fully developed nose
  • Have the desire to improve the shape, size, and/or symmetry of your nose
  • Be a non-smoker
  • Not be currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have realistic expectations for the procedure

What Should I Expect From the Results of Rhinoplasty?

After rhinoplasty, the results of the procedure will gradually become visible as your swelling and bruising subside and your new nasal contours fully settle. In many cases, it can take between six months and one year to see the final effects of the surgery.
