Implant-based breast restoration can be a simpler process than a flap-based breast reconstruction, which uses only your own tissue. One benefit is that implant reconstruction generally requires less operative and recovery time than flap procedures. However, implant-based reconstruction often requires several weeks to months before you can see your final results.

Who Should Consider Implant Breast Reconstruction?
Women who have a mastectomy following a breast cancer diagnosis or other trauma are faced with the decision of whether to reconstruct their breast(s). While not every woman chooses to have breast reconstruction, the procedure can help women feel whole and complete as they move on from their illness. Breast reconstruction can be performed using a breast implant or using your own tissue.
Implant-based breast reconstruction is often the best choice for women who are naturally thin with relatively small breasts. Fuller-breasted women may also benefit from implant breast reconstruction, but Dr. Kim may recommend a breast reduction on the remaining breast in the case of a unilateral mastectomy in order to create the most symmetrical results.
Implant Breast Reconstruction Techniques
In general, implant based breast reconstruction is achieved in two stages:
- First, a temporary tissue expander implant is placed at the time of the mastectomy. This temporary saline filled implant can be subsequently filled in the office to gradually expand the skin to the desired volume.
- In the second stage, Dr. Kim removes the temporary tissue expander, which may feel hard to the touch, and replaces it with a more natural-feeling saline or silicone gel implant.
In the right candidates, Dr. Kim may recommend a single-stage breast implant reconstruction. This approach use a dermal matrix such as AlloDerm® breast implant, comprised of an acellular dermal matrix (ADM) made of donated human tissue. The AlloDerm® implant often results in a more natural-looking breast.
During your initial consultation with Dr. Kim, she will explain your options in more detail. Women who do choose implant-based breast reconstruction may require revision surgery in the future. Dr. Kim will work closely with both your oncologist and radiation therapist to develop a plan that meets your aesthetic as well as health needs.
