How long does it take for breast reduction to settle?
A breast reduction is an important cosmetic step, and for many patients, it is often a medical necessity. A breast reduction reduces overly large, heavy or pendulous breasts, which can cause neck and back pain and make it difficult for clothes to fit well. Aesthetically, a breast reduction creates a smaller, more shapely and proportionate symmetry to your physique.
Once your procedure is complete, there is a settling period as your breasts heal. How long will that take? Let’s take a look at the details.
Initial recovery period
After your procedure, which takes about 3 to 4 hours, you go home with a supportive friend or family member. We provide medication and support, including detailed advice and instructions to make your recovery period as smooth as possible.
Your breasts will be bandaged in a surgical support garment, and you will wear a post-surgery support bra. Your breasts will be swollen. It’s very important to rest and allow yourself to recuperate during this first week. This will allow your body to heal faster, and help ensure your results are as satisfactory as possible.
Be sure to remain hydrated, eat healthy foods, and avoid any strenuous activity. Do not smoke, as this will impair the healing process.
Further recovery and final results
In the next few weeks as you continue your recovery, breast swelling will slowly reduce.
Second week
By the end of the second week, you will be able to have your dressings removed. However, continue to wear your compression bra, as this helps with the swelling and keeps your breasts in shape by helping the tissues form into the desired contour.
To help minimize the swelling, limit your sodium intake and drink a lot of water. About 80% of the swelling will ease after two weeks.
One month
At this point you will be able to see and feel the results of your breast reduction more clearly. Even though you are back at work and doing many of your usual routines, it’s important to keep wearing the compression bra.
Two months
You’ll feel back to normal after two months, but your breasts will still be in the healing process and are not yet completely settled. Even though you probably feel ready to wear some cute new clothes and bras, stick with the surgical bra. You might not be able to feel it, but your breasts are still slightly swollen.
Three-to-four months
By the end of three or four months, your breasts will have fully healed and settled. At this point, you can see the final, shapely and smaller results. Break out the cute bras and smaller tops and enjoy the results of your breast reduction!
