Bargain Shopping for Fillers? Choose Wisely!
Injectables have never been more popular, largely due to their versatility and ease of administration. That rising popularity is good for patients as more practices adopt the products and become more competitive with pricing and discounts. But it’s worth it to be a little wary of rock-bottom specials. After all, dermal filler injections are still medical procedures, and they can be ineffective or even dangerous if administered by an inexperienced provider. So how do you differentiate a good discount from a bad one?
Good Discount
The 2 key components of a good filler experience are easy to remember: provider and product. Take a look at the practice by reading online reviews and even checking their standing with the BBB. If you know the specific provider who performs injections, examine his or her background and credentials. Different states have different guidelines regarding who can perform injectable treatments. If the doctor doesn’t perform them, it should be a nurse or someone the physician supervises.
In my practice, my LVNs and RN perform dermal filler injections here in The Woodlands. These professionals have all been extensively trained on the proper administration of injectable products to create the best results possible for my patients.
And what about the product? Believe it or not, there’s a black market for counterfeit or diluted BOTOX® Cosmetic and fillers. Although these fake products aren’t typically harmful, they’ll likely be less effective than the real thing. Be sure you’re getting your money’s worth by asking to see the box the product came in. You can also visit the manufacturer’s website to make sure your injector is listed as a provider.
Bad Discount
The old adage “if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is” is especially applicable to aesthetic products. While those limited time Groupon-style deals in your inbox may be tempting, they often come with hidden caveats. It’s impractical for many medical practices to offer injectable treatments at rock-bottom prices. When you see a crazy deal, take a second look and double-check the fine print.
As a consumer, it’s important to remember that the only way for a qualified injector to obtain an authentic, FDA-approved product is to order it directly from the manufacturer … and only physicians can do that. If there’s no doctor or medical director mentioned, steer clear.
I know the appeal of a bargain can be tough to ignore. But when it comes to injectable treatments, or any medical procedure for that matter, your health and wellness are on the line. Choose wisely, do your research, and save the bargain shopping for shoes.
