Sculpt Your Way to a Better Body
In a little over a month, we will welcome the first official day of summer 2015. Hopefully, your summer plans include many trips to the pool, and perhaps a getaway to the beach or another tropical locale. If you aren’t completely satisfied with the way your figure looks in a bathing suit, don’t fret. There is still time to hit your goals before hitting the deck or sand.
In this post, Dr. Sugene Kim of SGK Plastic Surgery shares some helpful tips to sculpt your way to a better bikini body.
(Please note that Dr. Kim encourages you to check with your primary care physician before starting a new exercise routine or making significant changes to your diet.)
Exercise Tips
Tony Horton (the man behind the P90X workouts) recommends working out five days a week, blending cardiovascular exercise and body weight moves (e.g., pullups, sprints, swimming). You don’t need any fancy equipment, just your body weight. Consistent effort should yield noticeable results according to Horton.
On busy days when you can’t get to the gym, Horton recommends that you perform a 10-minute “U.C.M.L.” (upper, cardio, middle, lower) workout. This starts with maxing out pushups, then performing 60 seconds of cardio, then 30 reps of an abdominal exercise and finishing with 20-30 reps of a squat and plyometric jump. Repeat this round of exercises three to six times.
Diet Suggestions
As the popular quote says, “Abs are made in the kitchen, not the gym.” Diet is a critical component of any body-shaping plan. Essentially, you need to consume fewer calories than you burn in a day, while eating enough to fuel your body properly.
LiveStrong.com suggests a body sculpting diet consisting of fat-burning, whole foods like the following:
- Lean meats
- Low-fat dairy
- Fish
- Eggs
- Whole grains – brown rice, quinoa, sprouted grain breads
- A small amount of heart-healthy, monounsaturated fats – olive, canola or sunflower oil
Cosmetic Enhancement Options
Are traditional body sculpting techniques not giving you the results you want? If so, you’re not alone. Despite healthy eating and regular exercise, some people are unable to achieve their desired physique. Dr. Kim offers a range of surgical body sculpting solutions, including fat reduction with liposuction, to reshape troublesome areas such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks and upper arms. Or, if you have recently lost a substantial amount of weight and are left with loose excess skin that obscures your shape, body contouring surgery may be helpful. Body lift removes surplus skin for a tighter and more toned physique.
Keep in mind that surgical procedures typically require a recovery period, during which you must stay out of the sun, limit your range of motion and avoid any strenuous movement. Dr. Kim can give you more information about recovery times during your consultation.
